Reedwood Friends (Quaker) Church

In Preparation for Meeting: March 4, 2012

“We would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures…”

Reedwood continues its walk through the letter of James this Sunday. Clerk Pastor Ken Comfort will be sharing from James 1.19-25 in a message entitled “First Fruits.” The text reads as follows in the New Revised Standard Version:

In fulfilment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures. You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; for your anger does not produce God’s righteousness. Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls.

But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act—they will be blessed in their doing.

Our hymns/songs for this Sunday will be Instruments of Peace, Simple Gifts, and All Who Are Thirsty. Silas and Catherine Olson will be leading the singing this week.

The following are some queries to help prepare your heart and mind for worship:

How have you offered your life as a “living sacrifice” to be used as a blessing in God’s kingdom?

What would it look like/be like to be given completely to God? How does that affect your life, attitudes and reactions?

Meeting for Worship begins at 9:30am.
